Concrete: A composite material composed of rock, sand, cement powder and water that fills the space that is formed and then hardens. It can be cast into different shapes, is durable, is the most sought after construction material in terms of compression strength (construction material with highest strength per unit cost), and its increasing use is fundamental for sustainable construction in any application foundations - floors, walls, highways and bridges are all made of concrete.

A&T Construction does not simply manufacture concrete - we develop solutions based on the thorough knowledge and application of concrete technology. Through years of experience and state-of-the-art expertise about the different concrete constituents and their interaction, A&T Construction offers our customers concrete that is tailor-made to your project.

We continuously work to improve the properties of concrete that make it a key component of sustainable construction. Like the durability, resistance to aggressive environments such as the harsh Albertan freeze-thaw cycles, cracking resistance and sulfate resistance.

We also work to develop innovative solutions that advance the sustainability of structures made with concrete. In this way, our customers' projects can take advantage of the benefits of concrete in a wide range of applications.

How ready mix concrete is made

Raw material used to produce concrete:
  • Rock
  • Sand
  • Cement powder
  • Water
  • Additives

Aggregates

Aggregates, which make up roughly 60% to 75% of ready-mix concrete’s volume, are obtained from local area pits, and is then crushed and screened to conform to specifications.

Additives

We use liquid or powdered chemical substances that can be added to ready-mix concrete before or during preparation. That can provide us with a number of different characteristics when added to the concrete such as air-entrainments, set retarders, accelerants, plasticizers and water reducers.

Water

This is concrete's vital fluid. It is an essential part of the chemical reaction and temperature of the concrete and has to be closely monitored.

Cement

The cement is the ingredient that gives concrete its strength and what causes it harden. Each mix-design has a different amount of cement allotted for it to meet or exceed the given strength within the specifications.

Concrete mixing

During the mixing phase the different components come together at the proper times to produce a uniform mass of concrete for our customers.
